Should Babies Go To the Dentist?
Do Babies Go To the Dentist?
“Should babies go to the dentist?” or “when should I bring my baby to the dentist?” are both questions we hear from mothers of infants quite often. At our iGrin clinic, we see children of all ages on the daily. We always like to tell mothers we may see their babies for cleanings and check-ups as long as they have teeth! The American Dental Association recommends bringing your little ones in for their first cleaning and check-up as soon as their first tooth appears but no later than their first birthday. It’s necessary for parents to have all dental concerns for their babies addressed at an early age to ensure a lifetime of great dental health.
Why Babies Go To the Dentist at an Early Age
Babies should be taken to the dentist to make sure their primary teeth are healthy, clean, and in good condition. Although a child’s “baby-teeth” are only temporary, they are still susceptible to developing decay. Primary teeth play an important role in your child’s ability to chew food, speak, and smile! These primary teeth also are place holders for their permanent teeth. Losing primary teeth prematurely due to decay or other reasons may cause orthodontic challenges for your child in the future. Getting educated on how to care for your child’s teeth early on will ensure them of a lifetime of exceptional dental health.
What to Expect
To help your little ones view dental hygiene visits as a normal part of life, bring them for their first appointment as soon as possible! Your child’s first appointment will entail a cleaning with one of our qualified hygienists and a full comprehensive exam with the dentist. You should treat the exam with the dentist similarly to a check up with your child’s pediatrician. The dentist will teach you the proper way to clean your child’s teeth and check for any problems such as tooth decay. They’ll also discuss with you all the necessary practices to keep your baby’s teeth and gums healthy!
