Join Our Oral Care Challenge | National Dental Hygiene Month
National Dental Hygiene Month is an annual event held every October. It’s a time to celebrate oral hygiene and help our patients understand the importance of regular, clean teeth. In recognition of National Dental Hygiene Month, we are releasing our new Oral Care Challenge. The challenge encourages you to brush your teeth for two minutes, floss for 30 seconds, and rinse your mouth with LISTERINE Antiseptic Mouthwash for one minute daily.
Our goal with this challenge is to give our patients ideas on how to improve their oral health and create healthy habits daily. Here are some helpful tips on how to maintain healthy teeth and gums:

Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride is a mineral component of toothpaste that helps to prevent cavities by strengthening tooth enamel. It also helps remineralize damaged teeth and can be used on all teeth surfaces, including areas inaccessible with a toothbrush. Additionally, this mineral prevents the formation of plaque and further strengthens teeth.
Floss at least once a day
Flossing is one of the most important ways to care for your teeth and gums. Almost half of Americans don’t floss daily, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues.
To avoid these problems, you should floss at least once a day. It can also help prevent periodontal disease, when bacteria builds up in the spaces between teeth and causes dental health issues. This can lead to an increased risk of heart disease as well as a loss of bone density. Another reason to floss is that it helps remove substances like saliva from the mouth that causes plaque buildup and bad breath.
Rinse your mouth with LISTERINE® Antiseptic Mouthwash
Rinse your mouth with LISTERINE® Antiseptic Mouthwash for one minute daily. The mouthwash kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria, including the types that cause bad breath, gum disease, and cavities. Gargle LISTERINE® Antiseptic Mouthwash after brushing your teeth to remove plaque and minimize tooth decay. Trying to create healthy habits with your children? Visit the dentist every 6 months for a professional checkup
Make sure you schedule a professional checkup at the dentist every six months. This will help you detect any abnormalities or other problems early. If you notice that your teeth are starting to look yellow, dark, or discolored, talk to your doctor immediately and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Replace your toothbrush every two to three months
The bristles of your toothbrush wear down over time and can become ineffective. If this happens, throw it away and replace it with a new toothbrush.
Rinse with water after eating acidic foods such as oranges or tomatoes
Acidic foods can cause staining on the enamel of your teeth. Rinse with water after eating these foods to help remove any residue.
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water between meals and throughout the day
Water plays a vital role in helping your body digest food and flushes out the harmful bacteria that can cause plaque. It’s recommended that you consume around eight ounces of water before every meal.
Avoid sugary foods, tobacco, and alcohol
Sugar has a negative effect on teeth as it increases the acidity of saliva, which is harmful to your teeth and gums. Switching to sugar-free drinks and foods like fruit juice instead will help reduce the risk of cavities.
Use an interdental brush
An interdental brush should be used to clean between your teeth where toothbrush bristles are unable to reach. It can be used with a regular toothbrush or a manual toothbrushing technique by inserting it into the back of one’s mouth between two opposing front teeth.
Floss daily
It may seem like a lot of effort, but flossing can prevent gum disease and tooth decay as well as strengthen teeth
