However, modern dentistry has made root canals relatively painless.<a name=\"What Is a Root Canal\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This article explores some of the common misconceptions about root canals. It also provides a detailed description of how the procedure works, along with explanations as to why it is useful and even necessary in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>If you think you may be facing a root canal, keep reading. If this area becomes infected or inflamed, treatment becomes necessary to save the tooth and prevent further complications.<\/p>\n<p>The modern form of root canal treatment (RTC) has been around since at least the 19th century, but archeological evidence suggests that some version of the process was performed by the ancient Arabs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1985\/08\/09\/ancient-root-canal-dug-up\/\">approximately 2,000 years ago<\/a>.<sup>2<\/sup> RTC is also known as \u201cendodontic therapy,\u201d which is the process of removing pulp tissue at the center of the tooth.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>RTC is often essential for treating endodontic diseases, which are a group of conditions of the pulpal\/periapical tissues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41368-024-00285-0\">caused by infection<\/a>.<sup>3<\/sup> Without the procedure, in some circumstances, teeth would need to be extracted. allowing the patient to maintain their natural smile and oral function.<\/p>\n<p>The pulp inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed for various reasons. The dentist will also use ultrasonic instruments to clean calcified canals or remove debris from the canal system. They will also disinfect the remaining cavity.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Filling the Root Canals<\/h3>\n<p>Once the canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6632621\/\">material called gutta-percha<\/a>.<sup>4<\/sup> <a name=\"Benefits of Root Canal Treatment\"><\/a>This completely seals the canal to prevent future infection.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Sealing the Tooth<\/h3>\n<p>After the root canals are filled, a temporary filling is placed to close the opening in the tooth.
